Town of Carolina Shores Easement (Right of Way) and Private Property
The Town of Carolina Shores has established easements to properties in the Carolina Shores POA. These easements are set up for the maintenance of the water management systems to protect the properties during high rain conditions to avoid flooding and damage to your homes. The easement grants the Town access “for public roads purposes”; this does not create an easement for public use, but rather to allow access to a public road. Below is an example of the drainage systems on either side of the Acreage of Carolina Shores POA, along Pinewood Drive that all transverse the rear of private property.
The access roads behind the properties is comprised of Private property that is not designated as public land so in effect walking or entering the roadways is trespassing on your neighbors back yard. Please respect their private property as you would wish others to do on your own property.
Carolina POA office M-F 9am to 12PM daily or download the permit forms from the Carolina Shores POA website.
CSPOA BOARD OF DIRECTORS FOR 2024 ELECTION DAY
CANDIDATES FOR ELECTION TO THE CSPOA BOARD OF DIRECTORS FOR 2024
Candidates in Alphabetical Order
Jeff Alt- Resident since 2017. Education: B.S. Industrial Management/Accounting Major, University of Akron, Akron Ohio. Experience/Skills: 40 plus years of leadership and administrative problem-solving skills that would allow me to contribute worthwhile ideas and actions to the Board. If elected I would ensure that the POA meets and exceeds the needs and expectations of the residents of the community. I have worked part time for the Town of Carolina Shores to prepare for and recover from major weather events. I have also helped with other activities for the Town as required. Areas of Interest: Audit and Finance, Advisory, Maintenance. I was elected President of the CSPOA Board on August 15, 2023, to replace Joe Watts who had resigned.
Christopher Edwards- Resident since 2017. Education: Associate degree in theology, Advanced Law Enforcement Certification, State Instructor Certification, NC Emergency Management Certification, State Incident Command Certification, Basic Law Enforcement Training Certification, and Unmanned Aircraft System Licensed. Experience/Skills: Between my Law Enforcement career which started in 1998 and my time as Public Works Director for the Town of Carolina Shores which started in 2015, I have over twenty-five years’ experience in serving the public. The last eight and a half years I have been serving the residents of Carolina Shores. If elected I would like to learn from the current board members as much as possible including the proper procedures and policies for each committee and help as much as possible. I would also like to utilize my training in emergency management to increase community awareness in emergency preparedness such as how to plan for an event. How to protect your home and how to prepare for evacuation. In my duties as Public Works Director for the Town of Carolina Shores I have been here for every event including storms and concerts. Areas of Interest: Advisory Committee and Maintenance Committee. I became a Director on the CSPOA Board in August 2023, and I am responsible for Grounds.
Rick Griffith- Home owner since 2017, full time resident since 2020. Education: Graduated from Towson University in Maryland in 1977 with a degree in Business Administration. Experiences/Skills: I spent most of my career with Allied Building Products in building material distribution. I served in many positions including branch manager, sales and operations management. I retired in 2020. I’ve been involved in many groups over the years. Since I’ve retired to Carolina Shores, I’ve become very active with activities around our area. I serve as the USA Ambassador in Brunswick County which involves working with the Brunswick County Recreation Board and local communities to help with the growth of pickleball in the area. I started the CSPOA Pickleball Club in November 2020. We now have over 50 CSPOA residents in our club. I was instrumental in working with our CSPOA Board in having 6 permanent pickleball courts installed in July 2022. I help with game night which runs in conjunction with Friday Happy Hour to include bocce and cornhole. I’ve helped Kelly and the pool team with the opening and closing of the pool. With the help of our pickleball group, we help maintain the tennis and pickleball courts and surrounding area. I attend almost every CSPOA Board Meeting, and I help with most social events. I try to volunteer and help with anything that’s needed to make our CSPOA community a great place to live.
Sue Hensler- Resident since 2012. Education: B.S. Physical Education-Glenville State College. Experience/Skills: Through my many years in education, I have developed good communication and organizational skills which allowed me to serve on many leadership committees. I wish to bring that leadership to the CSPOA board. I am currently a Director on the Carolina Shores POA Board with my chief responsibility being the Recreation/Social committee. Over the years my committee has provided social activities for our membership. The committee has hosted Bingos, Memorial Day and Labor Day picnics, Oktoberfest, monthly Happy Hours in the park, Holiday Christmas Dinner Dance, Thanksgiving Sharing Table, and the Holiday Cookie exchange to just to mention a few. I will continue to encourage such activities for our membership if I am reelected.
Recreation and Social Activities – Sue O’Reilly
For many years volunteer members of our Carolina Shores Recreation Committee have organized and implemented various social activities to promote a sense of community, enjoyment and fun among our residents. These activities have progressed from an informal, once a year picnic to the present-- which now includes a catered Memorial Day picnic, monthly happy hours under the pavilion, an Ice Cream Social on July 4, an Oktoberfest celebration, a Cookie Exchange and Holiday Parties at an outside venue to celebrate the Christmas season.
Several times during the year, the POA clubhouse has been utilized for Bingo play, and this past year, a Music Bingo game was introduced. A community Thanksgiving dinner, with all the trimmings, is also an undertaking supported by residents with the help and organization by our committee members. There is a lot of “behind the scenes” planning that must happen in order to have a successful event. The old saying “many hands make light work” can be applied so that we can continue to provide the many opportunities to make our community the friendly and welcoming place it is.
If you would like to volunteer to be part of this outreach to plan and implement future activities, have an idea for a new one, or just to be on call if help is needed, come to the Recreation Committee Meeting on Thursday. February 1, 2024, at 4:00 p.m. at the POA clubhouse.

Book Discussion Group – Susie Riggs
The Book Discussion Group met on Friday, December 15. Our reading selection for the month was Someone Else’s Shoes by Jojo Moyes. This recent best-seller was, according to one member, “a heartwarming, endearing, funny romp that still brings tears (of laughter!) to my eyes as I relive some of the funnier parts in my memory!” The story of two young women whose lives become connected through an accidental gym bag switch and a pair of red shoes, explores class issues, complicated relationships, friendships, and character.
We also discussed the upcoming pot-luck luncheon which will be held after our January meeting. Those planning to attend should contact Pat McKay to let her know what type of dish (salad, entrée, or dessert) you will bring. The book for discussion will be Our Missing Hearts by Celeste Ng. The meeting and luncheon will take place on Friday, January 19, at 10:00 a.m. in the main room of the POA Clubhouse.
Garden Club – Happy Mullen
In December, the Carolina Shores Garden Club met at Talk of the Town in Ocean Isle for a holiday luncheon. Members, most in festive attire, enjoyed a wine sampling provided by the owner before their meal. Teddy Altreuter gave thanks for the earth and gardening in a blessing before lunch. It was a lovely afternoon.
January’s meeting will feature a talk on turf and native grasses, as well as the diseases they are prone to, as well as the maintenance needed to allow them to flourish. Following the January meeting, members are invited to participate in a workshop led by Cheri Williams. We will make a sea glass art project. Supplies will be provided and the cost is $20.
The Fundraiser in February, a Paint and Sip, will be February 8 at the clubhouse in the afternoon. Bonnie McGiver, president of the Waterway Art Association, will help members and guests create a painting of a bike with flowers in the bike basket. There will be a silent auction for gift baskets, as well as a fifty/fifty and the quilt auction. More details will be provided at the January meeting.
New members are always welcome at the garden club. The meetings are the second Wednesday of each month, annual dues are $10. Meetings always include a guest speaker, a plant raffle and a social hour. This year, the club is also raffling a quilt. Tickets are sold at every event and the winner will be chosen at the May luncheon. Please contact Mary Conover at 703-409-9612 with any questions.
Carolina Shores Quilters Group – Gloria Gustavson
We would like to extend an invitation to all past, present and future quilters to come and join us. We meet on the 2nd and 4th Friday of the month at 10:00 a.m. in the Carolina Shores POA clubhouse. Any questions, call me at 910-297-0066.
Care Team – Flo Pflaster
Care Team Volunteers
I would like to update this list. As of now, there are 59 people who had let me know they would be available to help with neighbors’ needs at times. I get few responses, mostly from the same 3-4 people. So, if you no longer wish to be on this list, please text me at 910-368-1070 or email me at dfp324@atmc.net
If you would like to stay on this list and would prefer to get notifications by email instead of through Nextdoor, please email me at dfp324@atmc.net and I will send out a group email when someone needs help in our community.
If you need help, please continue to let me know by calling me at 910-368-1070.
We have many volunteers on the Care Team, ready and willing to help our neighbors with temporary assistance. I will do whatever I can to find someone to help - all you need to do is call or email me!
I have learned about a great organization called Neighbor to Neighbor (n2ncarolina.org) (843) 839-0702.
They offer free rides to qualified people just as our CareTeam attempts to do, but with many more volunteers available to help. For information and to sign up for future needs, go to the website and click on “get involved” and then “be served” to fill out the form. Of course, I will continue to try and help our neighbors with the volunteers on my list, but this is an excellent option.
Thank you,
(910)368-1070 cell
